Home's the Place by Illucieon Home's the Place by Illucieon
Home's the place we head for in our sleep
Boxcars stumbling North in dreams
don't wait for us. We catch them on the run.
~Louise Erdrich (excerpt, 'Indian Borading School, the Runaways)

Things you may or may not need to know...

Inspired by a combination of Kafka's 'In the Penal Colony', Louise Erdrich's poetry on Indian boarding schools and imagery from Auschwitz. The image is the 'last stop' on the rail line to the death camp. Both this print and 'Punishments' deal with the inscription of physical and emotional scars on the body, while 'fixation' and 'scar' comment on the parallel scarring of the land.

It took approximately three hours to write out all the numbers, which represent the tattoos inscribed on the Auschwitz prisoners, in numerical order. Then I decided the line quality wasn't quite right and re did it all over again. They can also be found in 'punishments', but are harder to see as they are printed in clear medium over the black at the bottom.

Im sorry, I just have to say that this image leaves me speachless. The dedication on you part for writing out all the numbers, and horribly forboding feeling that that single window gives off.. like the last thing you see in the final reels of a horror film where the ending is saturated with death and loss... God.

Fantastic. very deeply moving.

what? Fucking awesome idea. And heartfelt as well.
Great commentary as well.

I've never read Kaftka. Heard he was depresssing. Wonder if it's even worth it.

Thanks engel, I always look forward to your comments. :) I actually hadn't read Kafka before this project, but I would say it is worth it if you happen to be in an angsty mood and can handle the depressing-ness of it. 'In the Penal Colony' is a pretty quick, yet loaded read...I would reccomend it.
